A massive bluefin tuna created waves at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, garnering a unprecedented bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2m; £2.4m) during the market's first auction of the calendar year.

The successful offer for the 535-pound fish was submitted by the operator of a nationwide sushi chain, which manages locations domestically and internationally.

"The year's tuna brings good luck," remarked the entrepreneur, a notable figure at the yearly first sale.

Dubbed the King of Tuna, this industry figure is renowned for making record bids for premium bluefin tuna at these symbolic January auctions.

Bidding Surprise and Record-Setting Precedent

Following the auction, the winner informed journalists that he was "taken aback at the amount," noting, "I believed we would be able to purchase it a little cheaper, but the price skyrocketed in no time."

This most recent purchase surpasses his own notable purchases:

  • He secured a tuna for 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
  • He bid 155 million yen in 2013.
  • In 2019, he won a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1 million).

Despite previously saying that he thought he "bid too high," he has now managed to break his own record another time.

An Annual Spectacle of High Prices

The first auction at the Tokyo fish market is traditionally known for exorbitant prices. In the prior year, the initial tuna was purchased for 207 million yen by another food company, which indicated the fish would be available at its locations throughout the country.

The frenetic energy at the fish market during these pre-sunrise auctions has evolved into a must-see spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which started around 05:00 local time, was no exception.

Immediate Consumption

The multi-million-dollar tuna was shortly thereafter sliced up for customers at the bidder's sushi establishments shortly after the auction concluded.

"I believe like I've started the year in a good way after tasting something so auspicious as the year starts," said one satisfied patron.
