Chelsea's Boss Maresca Labels Lead-Up Period as His 'Worst 48 Hours' at the Club

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca stated that the preparation to Saturday's triumph against Everton constituted "the worst 48 hours" of his tenure with the London club.

The Italian offered a puzzling statement in his after-game media briefing even after securing a 2-0 win at home through strikes from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto.

Those points propelled Chelsea once again into the English top flight's top four, potentially lightening the atmosphere after a defeat to Atalanta in the Champions League that had extended the side's winless run to consecutive outings.

Yet, when questioned about the full-back's contribution and overall display, Maresca unexpectedly divulged his frustration over the previous two days within the club.

"The way the lads are eager to learn has been excellent and this is the explanation why I commend them - because with numerous challenges, they are performing admirably after a tricky week," he said.

"Since I joined the club, the past 48 hours have been the toughest because many people failed to back us."

When pushed further on his meaning, the ex- Leicester City boss added: "Worst 48 hours since I came to the club because people failed to back me and the team."

When asked if he meant people internally at Chelsea, he replied: "In general. Overall," before clarifying when asked if it was aimed at fans or the media: "I adore the fans and we are very content with the fans."

Fitness and Disciplinary Crisis

Maresca also pointed to Chelsea's persistent fitness and suspension problems, noting they had been without star attacker Cole Palmer for much of the season, in addition to losing linchpin Moises Caicedo to a three-match ban and striker Liam Delap to a couple of significant injuries.

"I really applaud the players and the squad because we have played 16 Premier League games, 5 of them minus Moises Caicedo, 11 of them minus Cole Palmer, almost all of them minus Liam Delap," he said.

"And this squad, no matter who is playing, they are doing brilliantly. Today was 5 games in 12 days so undoubtedly when you see Cole Palmer available, we have said many times that he's our finest player but we play almost all season without our best player.

"We play five games in the Premier League minus Moises Caicedo. This is the reason why I'm so happy for the players and it's something that I would want people outside to acknowledge because the effort from the players is remarkable."

Chelsea's win over Everton consolidated their position in 4th place in the Premier League table, with a Carabao Cup quarter-final tie at Cardiff and a league journey to Newcastle scheduled next week.

Speculation Regarding Maresca's Comments

It was not immediately clear what exactly caused Maresca to label the previous 48 hours as the most difficult of his spell as Chelsea head coach.

In that period, the Italian had traveled back with his backroom team and players from his native Italy, held a session at the training ground, faced a pre-game news conference where he seemed relaxed, and engineered a victory over an high-flying Everton side.

It was not obvious whether any specific press stories had irked him, if online comments played a role, or if it was something deeper from inside the club at Stamford Bridge.

Maresca only sought to deny that it was an matter related to the club's supporters, some of whom have still have yet to fully warm to him since his arrival from Leicester during July 2024.
