Former US treasury secretary Lawrence Summers is departing from the directorate at the ChatGPT creator, just days after a batch of digital correspondence between him and late convicted sex offender the disgraced billionaire became widely known.
He stated in a statement that he was "grateful for the opportunity to have contributed, excited about the prospects of the organization, and look forward tracking their advancement".
The former Harvard president, who previously presided over the Ivy League institution, announced on earlier this week that he would be scaling back from public roles due to his association with Epstein.
The recently released messages showed that the official corresponded with the financier until the eve of Epstein's 2019 apprehension for accused trafficking of young people.
In a separate statement, the technology organization expressed it accepted Summers' decision to resign.
"We appreciate his many contributions and the insight he brought to the governing body," the company remarked.
This announcement arrives after both chambers of the legislative branch agreed on Tuesday to approve a bill that would compel the federal prosecutors to release its files on the case.
The measure will then head to the administration of US President Donald Trump for endorsement. Trump has indicated he intends to endorse the measure, after reversing his position on the matter following pressure from his followers.
A group of financier-linked messages released by the Congressional committee days ago included multiple prominent individuals in the billionaire's former circle, without indicating any legal wrongdoing by those people.
The emails showed that the professor and Epstein dined together frequently, with Epstein often trying to link Summers to prominent global figures.
After the correspondence were made available with the wider community, he said he assumed "complete accountability for my misguided judgment to continue interacting with the financier".
He further stated that he desired "to rebuild faith and mend bonds with the persons nearest to me".
Summers held leadership roles under Democratic administrations; functioning as treasury secretary under Bill Clinton, and as head of the National Economic Council under the former leader.
He led the university from the early 2000s and remains a faculty member there. When declaring his departure from public duties previously on this week, he said he would persist with his educational duties.
Following Summers' announcement on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a left-leaning think tank in DC where Summers was a senior fellow, announced that Summers was ceased to be affiliated with the group.
Summers became part of the board of the AI company, which develops the AI chatbot, in 2023 - following a failed attempt to oust its CEO OpenAI's head.
