A chief executive of Domino's Pizza Group who proposed the UK might have hit pizza saturation while diversifying the chain into fried chicken has been ousted after conflicts with its directors.
Andrew Rennie is exiting after only 24 months in the top role, and will be replaced on an acting basis by the company's operations head, Nicola Frampton, while the pizza giant looks for a permanent CEO.
The outgoing executive, who worked for Domino's for a substantial period, had aimed to redirect Britain's leading pizza takeaway chain towards fried chicken, stating in a recent interview there was not “huge potential” left in the UK's pizza market. He noted poultry was the most rapidly expanding food category in the international market.
It is understood that there was disagreement between the CEO and the governance team over his strategy and business vision, although Domino's official statement said he was stepping down “through mutual consent”.
In the autumn, the chain unveiled its poultry product line – which the former chief called a “major strategic shift” for the group – and is testing it in 210 outlets in the North West region and the province.
While the business is still going to roll it out across its nearly 1,400 branches in 2026 as scheduled, it regards chicken products as a supplement for its core pizza business.
Bull, the Domino's chair, said: “We are confident that there are a range of possibilities to boost expansion and profitability in the main pizza segment. We are prioritizing selecting the suitable leader to lead the disciplined execution of that growth strategy.”
Recently, Domino's, which has millions of users in the UK and Ireland, said transactions dipped by 1.5% in the Q3. In August, it warned that the quick-service industry had “grown more challenging” as it attributed economic uncertainty in the lead-up to the budget and increasing labor expenses for disappointing revenue and a 15 percent decline in interim earnings.
Other pizza operators are also struggling. Pizza Hut announced the closure of multiple locations a last month, after the company behind its British operations fell into administration.
Adapting to consumer trends towards balanced diets, the company has introduced reduced-calorie options, such as its light base range of bakes below 400 kcals as well as meat-free and gluten-free pizzas. A large pepperoni pizza has over 2,300 kcal. A big margherita has over 2,100, while a small has 909 calories.
The interim chief has been with Domino's since 2021, and was formerly with the gaming group William Hill. It is thought that she prefers not to take on the CEO position permanently.
She said: “Our team has a several current development and performance initiatives that we will be dedicated to implementing at pace.”
She added these included additional efforts on the company's procurement system and new item creation, and its rewards program.
Domino's is also without a long-term CFO until 16 March, when Andy Andrea starts from the Irish cider and beer maker a well-known firm. Until then, Richard Snow is acting financial officer.
