The Battle Royale's Specialized Traversal Techniques Are Going Mainstream This Season

The game developers has an exciting surprise in store for Apex Legends gamers, perfectly timed for the holidays. Enthusiasts of this game's super-slick movement can rejoice to learn that a new movement mechanic will be introduced when the Amped season goes live on November 4th.

Introducing Mantle Boosting

Named "Mantle Boosting" by Respawn, this feature provides gamers a surge of forward momentum when scaling ledges and walls. As explained lead battle royale designer Eric Canavese, Mantle Boosting has unofficially been a feature of Apex Legends for some time, often called as "mantle jumping." However it's no easy feat for casual gamers, and typically employed by competitive players in Ranked Mode or tournaments. This season, Respawn is making it easier for players of all skill levels to successfully perform these advanced movement boosts.

"This technique have been in the game for some time, but executing it requires skill to pull off and a player would never know it [is in the game] without external guides," Canavese explains. "Now including a visual cue so players can clearly identify the timing to trigger the fast-paced movement ability, making accessible the feature and adding new ways to play for a much wider base."

The Reasoning Behind Make It Accessible

Why make a once niche technique accessible to everyone? Lead Legend designer Josh Mohan explains developers wants gamers to experience empowerment — including ones who are new.

"Our community performs advanced techniques like super-gliding and tap-strafing, and we examined at our competition, looked at what the community are doing, and we wondered, 'How can we provide these capabilities to a broader audience?'" the designer explains. "Because currently, some of these advanced [movement] mechanics are kind of janky to use — you need to remap your keybinds and hit one-frame windows. So we said, 'What if we create a more official implementation?'"

Season 27 Emphasis on Mobility

Mobility is largely the name of the game in Season 27, with Legends Horizon, Rampart, and the aerial combatant all getting buffs to help keep them in motion. Recovery time on her tactical ability has been decreased, and the Gravity Lift will boost players upward faster than it used to. Her defensive walls feature a roof and the ability to grant speed boosts to those nearby. However it's the high-flying Valkyrie who's getting the most attention this season, with various adjustments implemented to enhance her as more potent, quicker, and more lethal.

"In my opinion there's quite a consensus that Valkyrie's time has arrived," says character developer Ian Holstead. "Certainly she was top-tier in the past, but due to the addition of new Legends, mobility perks, and Evac Towers, it felt like she fell behind in today's Apex. It was a really great opportunity for the team to reexamine multiple elements in her abilities and essentially bring her back to former prominence."

Enhancements to the Aerial Legend

To restore her competitive status in current strategies, Holstead says Respawn evaluated each of her abilities and implemented significant modifications. Her VTOL Jets received improvements, boosting velocity during flight, and the jets themselves now recharge much quicker, enabling her to spend more time in the air. She can no longer take damage from her ultimate ability, which has also been upgraded to mark enemies who are hit from it. Her squad redeploy ability — which lifts teammates into the air for repositioning or escape — requires reduced delay to fire up. Additionally, she gains recently added perk choices that players can choose to reduce fuel consumption, expand the spread of her rockets, or further speed up her ultimate takeoff time.

"Valkyrie's equipment fulfills that jet-fighter fantasy," he says.

Olympus Improvements

Even the game's lone airborne map, Olympus, is getting a mobility-focused facelift, with major changes that opens up choke points and renders securing elevated positions more manageable. Respawn says Apex Legends this update focuses on giving players the tools required to compete in the competition.

"Really, we examined Apex's fundamental nature as a fast-paced FPS," says lead Legend designer Josh Mohan.

The battle royale Season 27: Amped launches Nov. 4 at 10 a.m. PST/1 p.m. EST.
